How to Make a Toy Box
I have received several emails asking me to write an article on how to build a toy box from scratch so I decided that it would be helpful to show you how it’s done. Keep in mind that toy boxes are nothing more than some boards of the material you choose to use and a few nails and nails or something that will hold the boards together. To keep things simple though, today I will only tell you how to build a toy box made of wood. Make sure to read this article very carefully and also to look online for any toy box plans that you should always keep on the side while building. There are more than one ways to go about this but for simplicity’s sake; we will just try to create a simple box. Let’s get started then!
To build a wooden toy box you are going to need 6 boards of wood that should be paired into three groups of equal size. You need to large pieces for the base and the lid and two pairs of boards for the width and the length of the box.
After you have acquired the wooden boards you are going to need to find something to hold them together. The easiest and wisest choice when it comes to building a toy box is to get double wide corner braces with screws and you are going to need 13 of those.
Screw four of these braces on the base of your toy box across its length, two on each side. Make sure to spread them out on equal intervals across both sides as this is very important. After that you need to screw the two long sides of your handmade toy box onto the braces and add four more braces on the upper corners of those boards. Also make sure to add 2 more braces on the narrow sides of your base board which will hold the other two sides. Screw the other pair of boards you were left with on the other two sides and make sure to attach them with all of the braces. If you did everything appropriately you should end up having a wood toy box with no lid attached. To attach the lid you need to use the remaining three braces both to the lid and to the upper part of one of the two long sides and you are set to go!
The only thing missing is a beautiful design to attract your child but I’m here for that as well! Personally, when I was a child, I used to love personalized toy boxes that I decorated myself. Even though times have changed, I can almost guarantee that the best way to decorate the toy box you just made is to let your kid paint or draw whatever he or she feels like on it! Just give them some crayons and pencils and let them go crazy. If your children are too young though to paint an unfinished toy box then you should do it yourself! We all have a little child buried deep somewhere within us and it would be wonderful to let it out every once in a while!
